The do’s and don’ts of choosing the correct renewable energy installer

A BIT OF BACKGROUND
So, Energie Solutions have been involved in Renewable Energy for many years now, installing, repairing and maintaining ASHPs, Solar Thermal and Solar PV systems and more recently Air Conditioning systems. Alarmingly we are getting more and more calls from homeowners who were promised the Renewable Heat Incentive from the installation company, to discover, upon completion of the Solar Thermal or ASHP installation that in fact the Installation company can not in fact offer this.

WHAT CAN I DO TO ENSURE I AM ENTITLED TO THE RHI?
This fortunately is very simple. Do your research. Don’t just take the installers word for it that they are accredited to offer the Renewable Heat Incentive(RHI). Every installation company who are accredited to offer the RHI are MCS registered. The company will be able to provide you with their registration number which you will then be able to search on the microgenerationcertification scheme website. If they haven’t provided you with the registration details, you can search using their company name.

WHAT IF THEY DON’T HAVE A REGISTRATION NUMBER?
Then simply put, they can’t offer it to you.

IS CLAIMING THE RHI WORTHWHILE?
Yes! For a domestic ASHP installation, the RHI is capped at £9,100 over a period of 7 years. The amount you will receive will depend on the Heatloss calculations of the property and EPC certificate. It is absolutely therefore worthwhile investing in a company who can offer the scheme.

I”M BUILDING AN EXTENSION/ BUILIDN MY OWN HOME AND THE BUILDER HAS SAID HIS PLUMBER CAN INSTALL THE ASHP
That may well be true, however the same principle applies, the plumber will still be able to provide you with the registration details to provide their ability to offer the RHI.

Unfortunately, in our experience this largely is not the case at all. Most builders have no or very limited knowledge of the ASHP technology no more than we do of building a brick wall. We are all specialists in our field for a reason.
