Importance of annual servicing

ASHP & GSHP

Just like gas & oil boilers, it is important to have all airsource heatpumps (ASHP) systems serviced annually to ensure you get the maximum performance from your ASHP/GSHP throughout its working life and also reduce the risk of potentially unnecessary and costly emergency repairs. This is necessary not only to comply with the warranty conditions, but also to meet the demands of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme and Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant (BUS). ASHP/GSHPs are designed to help reduce heating and hot water bills, however, if they are not regularly maintained they can do the exact opposite.

As under-performance issues go un-noticed the immersion heater usage will increase causing an increase in electricity consumption. In turn making the system more costly and inefficient to operate.

Solar thermal hot water systems have been around for some time now. They are a tried and tested technology, but to get the best out of your solar thermal system there are some key points to remember:

Regular servicing

Many owners tell us that they had no idea that solar thermal panels need servicing. Just like your car, servicing on a regular basis is essential. There are components within a system such as the pump and valves that must be kept in good working order. Regular servicing minimises your running costs and maximises the amount of renewable heat produced and of course maximises the life span of the system.

What is the fluid in the system?

One of the most important aspects of your solar thermal system is the heat transfer fluid. You will need to replace the fluid every 5 years to ensure that the pH and antifreeze-protection levels are correct. Failure to do this can have serious costly consequences. The solar transfer fluid should NEVER simply be topped but the system should be flushed out, cleaned and then flushed with the new transfer fluid.

Air conditioning, MVHR & HVAC

Whether these systems have been installed in domestic properties, in Public buildings such as Community Centres, Schools, Charities & Libraries they can be easily overlooked. Tucked away on roofs, behind walls and above ceilings, they quietly go about their business day in, day out and are largely forgotten about.

As so many of our customers discover, unless a formal preventive servicing and maintenance regime is in place, problems can quickly snowball. Gradually wearing parts may not appear to be causing problems, until the system is put to the test by a heatwave or cold snap. In the meantime, it will be running below efficiency. An inefficient system won’t be able to deliver it potential and will be more susceptible to premature wear, overheating, system failure, and a shortened service life.
