How does solar pv work?

Solar PV (photovoltaics) systems use the sun’s energy to generate electricity.

Free energy!

Solar panels are made up of lots of cells made from silicon, which receive the light from the sun and create a flow of electricity.

Powering your home or business with the sun

Most solar PV systems generate direct current (DC) energy. An inverter converts the electricity to AC which can be used to power your home, stored in a solar battery for future use or be exported to the grid.

High power, low costs

On a sunny day, each panel can generate up to 355W of energy. Even in our dark UK winters the solar panels still produce power, but in general, the more sunlight, the more energy.

Are solar panels Expensive to install?

Will solar panels save me money?

Do solar panels get dirty?
In the UK, we tend to tilt panels by around 15% to increase performance, but also to help rain runoff, which keeps them clean, so they can capture even more sunlight and continue to work efficiently.

What is the lifespan of solar panels?
When properly maintained, your solar PV system should last for up to 30 years.

Do solar panels work in winter?
Yes! Even on cloudy days, your solar panels will still be able to capture energy from the sun. However, the more sunlight there is, the more energy will be generated. That’s why we recommend a solar battery and a solar PV immersion diverter, to make the best use of the energy on sunny days.
